Event Photography for Opera in the Pines

A Captivating Performance of The Crucible by Opera in the Pines

Grace Koury of Portland, Maine

Each year, the dedicated team at Opera in the Pines brings a tasteful & creative production to the state of Maine. Building on the success of last year’s production of Bar Crawl Boheme, they decided to recreate the 1953 play; The Crucible, incorporating their own operatic & theatric flair.

Promotional media was essential for this event, so I journeyed to Cape Elizabeth, Maine, in mid-October to capture haunting and atmospheric imagery that would elevate the public's anticipation for the live performance. The goal was to evoke the eerie and dramatic essence of The Crucible, enhancing the overall excitement and setting the tone for what audiences could expect.

A significant part of achieving this goal was working with ballet professional, Grace Koury, who would play The Silenced Woman in the live production. As Grace dressed the part of The Silenced Woman, she also brought her own unique flair with her skillful ballet. We were able to capture the perfect balance of innocence, elegance, & dramatized freight that is The Crucible.

The 3 night production of The Crucible by Opera in the Pines, held at The Old Red Church in Standish, Maine, was a unique opportunity for me to showcase my passion for professional event photography. This modern opera adaptation, based on Arthur Miller's iconic play, featured a talented cast of Maine-based opera singers and actors who delivered passionate and nuanced performances. The intimate setting and minimalist staging focused the audience's attention on the emotional depth of the narrative and the complexities of the characters, providing me with the perfect environment to capture vividly striking imagery.

The carefully crafted performance began outside of the Old Red Church, setting the stage before the show even began. As guests arrived, they were greeted by cast members who seamlessly wove their characters into the surroundings, creating an immersive experience from the moment they stepped onto the scene. This not only created a fun experience for all guests, but it offered me unique grounds for my images.

On Saturday night the performance was carefully reviewed by Portland Press Herald who praised the production for its "rich and engrossing" portrayal, highlighting the seamless integration of music and libretto. Directed by Sable Strout and her incredible team, the opera explored themes of hysteria, fear, and integrity, making for an unforgettable experience.

Working with Opera in the Pines as a photographer has truly been such a rewarding and enriching journey. Capturing the essence of Opera in the Pines' rendition of The Crucible was a wonderful opportunity to delve into creative and atmospheric imagery. The branding session in Cape Elizabeth and the live performances in Standish provided a chance to practice my skills in live event photography, particularly in capturing the haunting and dramatic moments that made this production unique. Collaborating with Grace Koury and the talented cast was a joy, and I feel grateful to have contributed to creating visual content that resonated with the audience. This project was a reminder of the important role high-quality photography plays in building excitement and setting the tone for a memorable experience. Working with such a talented and visionary team was an honor, and it continues to inspire my passion for photography each time I get to work with them!
